DITCH THAT TEXTBOOK!
Website and articles by Matt Miller

This week I decided to visit Matt Miller's website Ditch that Textbook! When I first got to the website, I was shown many different articles and a brief introduction of what each article had in it. I read through a few and really enjoyed them! I found one article that I enjoyed reading about and learned from the most. " 20 easy ways to collaborate with your class now" has many ideas to connect kids to classrooms all over the world! The kids can use Skype to talk with students or teachers from everywhere and meet new people. I thought that was an amazing idea and plan on using it in my future classroom. Another thing this article brought up was taking virtual tours. Many schools do not have the funding to take trips very far or the kids are too young but they can see the world virtually! These video sessions are not just for the students but for teachers as well. Teachers can collaborate with other teachers anywhere and give advice or help out with lesson plans. There was a section in here that talked about co-teaching virtually with another class. One teacher would give the lesson on video chat to both classes and the teacher whose class was listening in on would walk around and help her students as the other taught the lesson. I thought that was a really cool and fun idea to try with students. The last cool thing I'll mention is that if you subscribe and submit your email address, you get a free etext call 101 Practical Ways to Ditch That Textbook. It is a very interesting read with great ideas! I would highly recommend this site to anyone who is looking for ways to help their class get familiar with using the iPads. It is also a great way to help kids explore the world and understand different cultures. |
